A Word About Tequila

The above picture pretty much sums up our experience so far, here in Mexico. It's not that we've been drinking constantly, but when we do decide to take part in a little bit of alcohol, the options are mostly limited to...you guessed it. Tequila (Oh yeah and beer). The reason for this is that Jalisco, the state in which Guadalajara is located, is where the liquor originated. Our first couple of days here we went to the grocery store and scanned the liquor aisles. Of all the options, 90% of the available spirits were Tequila (I looked for vodka for 5 whole minutes before finally spotting 4 choices and that was it) and there were sooo many choices. We grabbed one of the cheaper bottles and hauled our stuff home. We popped back out to run an errand and when we came back, Moizes and Raphael (another guy who lives here) were both in the kitchen. We brought up the question concerning quality of tequila to which Moizes replied "Oh yeahhh...we saw what you bought. No bueno." So Raphael, the in-house tequila connoisseur gave us a little lesson. Good quality Tequila must be made in Mexico and bear the certification of the Tequila Regulatory Council (cue employment envy). It also must say "100% Agave" in order to be considered worthwhile and true lovers of the drink prefer to sip it, which Raphael insisted we do. Luckily, the good stuff is still crazy cheap (we paid 7 dollars for a bottle that seemed large enough to bathe a burro) and we'll be able to put all those tequila lessons into practice.

Hasta la proxima!
